Simple Pleasures to Welcome the Autumn Season

Today is the first official day of autumn and it’s quite possible that this season is most people’s favorite time of year (it certainly is mine).  The weather is starting to feel cooler each morning, the leaves are starting to subtly change colors and there is just something that feels so homey about the autumn season. There are so many seasonal things to delight in and the weekends start to feel cozy as we snug into our homes a little more. This post was originally shared back on the Petite Tresor blog last year, but I decided to bring it back and give an update for this year. As we officially start to transition into this most enchanting time of the year, here are some simple pleasures to welcome the autumn season.

Mums are such a beautiful seasonal flower with their many shades of red, maroon, orange, yellow and white. Whether you have a home where you can put pots of them on your front porch or like me you live in an apartment and can simply purchase a bouquet, it’s just such a simple pleasure to have them in the home during this time of year.

If you have been here long enough then you already know I love the simple pleasure of putting together a jigsaw puzzle and autumn is a season that I especially enjoy doing puzzles. There are so many different themed puzzles on sites like Amazon and Target that can easily be selected for purchase. You can make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee, put on some jazz music, light a scented candle and simply enjoy the process of putting together a beautiful puzzle.

As autumn arrives the trees burst into a symphony of amber, crimson, and gold painting the world with the quiet magic of change. Take some time this season to visit a park, botanical garden, arboretum or even just enjoy a walk around the neighborhood. Make a weekend plan to stop off and get a hot drink, then take a walk in nature to appreciate the changing seasons and the beautiful colors that are stunning, but oh so temporary. Sit down for awhile and enjoy the view and maybe even take book to linger awhile.

While I do love scented candles throughout the entire year, the autumn scent profiles are my favorite. With their spicy and woodsy notes, I really enjoy lighting a scented candle to enjoy the scents of the autumn season. Fun fact, our sense of smell is the closest sense related to our memory. Each year that I light a familiar scented autumn candle I am not only delighting in the present moment, but I am also taken back to all of those previous autumns from before. Whether you like candles, diffusers or incense, welcome in the season with an autumn scent to indulge in this simple pleasure.

More and more there are so many seasonal books and publications to enjoy, so why not pick a few to enjoy during the season? There is so much inspiration in magazines and so many fun stories in books to read. I am a seasonal person, so this time of year I start to pick up reading material centered around autumn to enjoy at home with a nice cup of afternoon tea and a small treat.

I know not everyone has a local Trader Joe’s, but if you do then now is a great time to visit.  They recently put out their fall harvest line full of all things autumn to enjoy. They also bring out so many other autumnal themed items too such as pumpkins, mums, cinnamon brooms, pumpkin beauty items and more. Grab yourself a coffee and make a trip to Trader Joe’s to enjoy the autumn ambience as well as the many items available to purchase.

I love cozying up in a cashmere sweater and scarf and going to the movie theater to enjoy an afternoon matinee in the fall. I recently went to watch Downton Abbey and had such a delightful afternoon. I also have the new Knives Out movie on my list for November too. Make a plan to see a movie or two this season and check your local listings to see if they are showing any seasonal films that are of interest to you or tune in every Friday for the Curated Weekly posts to see the ones that are catching my attention. After all, cozying up in the theater with an enjoyable movie and a favorite snack is one life’s little pleasures.

Whether you make something fully homemade or do a semi-homemade bake like these delectable cinnamon rolls, baking something remains one of those simple pleasures in life not to be missed, but especially during the autumn season. I will even pick up the pumpkin cheesecake croissants from Trader Joe’s to enjoy on the weekends. There is such a cozy feeling of the warm glow of the oven coupled with the scent of baking goods throughout the house. This simple pleasure is sure to make my list every year.

They come and go so quickly every season, so why not enjoy the simple pleasure of all things pumpkin? Maybe buy some decorative pumpkins for your home, or gather some real pumpkins for outside, or even enjoy pumpkin shaped items like a coffee cup. It’s a lovely way to incorporate the season into your home and it is always a simple pleasure to see them make their appearance each and every year.
